How to Dress for University

Published on

As the temperature starts dropping and the rain makes it ‘occasional’ visits, the fuzzy sweaters, and the brightly-colored raincoats are starting to come out. In the Netherlands, winter just pops up out of nowhere without an invitation or warning, leaving you unprepared.

A Students’ Wardrobe Essentials

As a student, you probably don’t have loads of time (or money) to go out shopping, I can speak from experience. Fortunately, I have laid out some on-trend, affordable options for you based on a few different styles.

Casual outfit

The Casual Laid-Back Student

If you’re looking for a casual and comfortable outfit that is stylish, try to incorporate the following items into your outfits. A cable-knitted sweater like this will keep you warm in cold lecture rooms while you still look cute. You can find these everywhere at the moment. They go very well with a pair of high-waisted, dark-washed mom jeans. These jeans are way more comfortable than skinny jeans and they’re very practical. Top it off with a puffer jacket and a pair of chunky sneakers, and you’ll be ready to face the cold and rainy months.

The Diligent and Always-On-Time Student

If you’re someone who likes to be a bit fancy when going to class and doesn’t mind putting in that extra effort, then this outfit is perfect for you. Silky, collared blouses are really trending this season and look great with a pair of plaid suit pants. Tuck in your shirt and put on a pair of black, leather heeled boots and you’ll create a beautiful, shape-enhancing silhouette. And in terms of outerwear, look for a long, wool coat that accentuates your body-shape. This type of coat makes you feel warm and cozy while still looking chic and smart.

The Always-Late Student

While studying and attending classes, you obviously want to be comfortable. Whether you’re someone who’s untroubled about how they look in class, or you’re simply too late to put together an outfit: this is the ideal option. A turtle neck instantly makes any outfit chicer and more sophisticated, so you don’t look like you just rolled out of bed. Try opting for a pair of slim-fit sweatpants, which will look more put together than baggy ones while still providing you with the same level of comfort. The leather jacket and slip-on create a more refined look with an edgy touch.

The Instagram-Influencer

And finally, for the student who likes to go all out and always dresses according to the latest trends (guilty!): this outfit is ideal. Paisley prints are super on-trend right now, ranging from shirts to dresses. I personally love combining this with leather bottoms, like these leggings which provide comfort and warmth during those long seminar sessions. I incorporated the current western trend with an essential pair of black cowboy boots, adding an extra edgy vibe to any outfit.

Another prominent Instagram trend is the teddy coat. I find a white teddy coat to be the perfect addition to every wardrobe. It will go with any outfit, it's extremely warm, cozy and super soft, fulfilling your winter morning lecture needs.

Whatever your style may be, whether you’re still in University or not, the linked items are affordable and long-lasting trends that will suit anyone. You can find alternatives to these items in various shops, so no need to roam around every store looking for that one item. Just don’t forget: amidst your hectic schedule, play around sometimes with different styles and items. Eventually, that’s what fashion is really about.
